It's hard to believe but September is almost here. September is the startup of clubs and organizations and now is the time to let everyone know when these events begin. The Verona website is a great place to let people know about your events, and to keep up with what's happening in Verona - and it's all free! Log onto www.yourverona.com to list your events or contact me and I will make sure it goes on the website.

The judges have made their decisions and the results for the 2nd Annual Adopt a Flower Barrel Contest will be announced and cash prizes awarded at the Garlic Festival. Another good reason not to miss the Fifth Annual Garlic Festival on September 3. I will be there early to restock my year's supply of garlic. There will be vendors from all parts of Eastern Ontario selling over 17 varieties of fresh garlic along with braids, sauces, spreads and growing tips. Sample great food, featuring delicious beef from The Frontenac Cattlemen's Association and sausage from Hanoverview and Maple-Lim Farms. Stroll among the Frontenac Farmers Market vendors with their wares of farm-fresh corn, vegetables, jams, preserves, local honey, maple syrup, garlic nibblers and baking. The festival will also offer a children's centre with arts, crafts, activities, a miniature train ride and mini-golf. The festival will be open rain or shine, outdoors or indoors at the Verona Lions Hall, 4505 Verona Sand Road, Saturday September 3, 9am to 2 p.m.

Our heart felt condolences to the family of Master Corporal, Dean A Benoit who passed away in his 35th year in a traffic accident on August 11. Master Corporal Benoit has served Canada in the Armed Forces since 2002. His deployments included Africa, Afghanistan and Haiti. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 12 years, Leann ( who lovingly called him Gussy) and his two children Madisen and Noah. A trust fund has been set up for his two children at the Verona branch of the Bank of Montreal.

The Frontenac County Plowmen's Association presents the 2011 Plowing Match and Rural Show this Friday and Saturday, August 26 and 27. This year, it is being hosted by the Willes Family at their farm on Sydenham Road. There will be a number of attractions to entertain the whole family, from tractor-pull demonstrations to fiddle music and singing. There will also be displays of antiques, saw mill operation, livestock, farm equipment and the big attraction of the whole weekend - the plowing competition. The ploughing competition will involve horse drawn and antique tractors as well as modern tractors. Admission $ 5.00 per adult, children under 12 free.
