It's Garlic Festival time! This Saturday, celebrate the stinky rose. Come early and enjoy Verona's final festival for 2011. There will be lots to eat and sample. It will be a fun day for the whole family. The Garlic Festival proudly hosts the Eastern Ontario Garlic Awards, with prizes for the best single bulb, 12-variety display, educational display and braid. The "Adopt A Barrel@quot; Flower Contest winners will also be announced at the festival. The festival will be open rain or shine, outdoors or indoors at the Verona Lions Centre, Verona Sand Road, Saturday September 3, 9am to 2 p.m.
Southern Frontenac Community Services is having an Open House at its new Food Bank location, Friday, September 2 from 2 to 4pm at the Rural Visions Centre, 4419 George Street, Sydenham. Qualified clients will be able to access the food bank once per month and receive a 5 - 7 day supply of non perishable items, plus fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs, bread and protein items. Their goal is to reduce hunger and break the cycle of poverty by improving the nutrition of families. Kudos SFCSC!
International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day is observed on September 9. People all around the world gather for events to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and to recognize the plight of families who struggle with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The first FASD Day was held on 9/9/99. That particular day, the ninth day of the ninth month, was chosen to remind us that during the nine months of pregnancy a woman should abstain from alcohol. The Verona Chapter will hold a special breakfast with guest speaker at Mom restaurant starting at 8 am on Friday, September 9. Interested participants are asked to preregister for this event and call Jean Freeman at 613-374-2968.
Scouts Canada, South Frontenac Group, 1st Verona Registration will be held on Thursday, September 8 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Trinity United Church Hall. Register your boys or girls in Beaver-Scouts (5-7 years), Cub-Scouts (8-10), and Scouts(11-14). Older youth for the Venturer-Scout and Rover-Scout programs are also welcome to contact them. On September 17, 2011 the village of Bellrock will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary. The celebration begins at 12:00 noon and will continue through to the early evening. The theme of the event is to recreate what would have been a village gathering circa 1861, complete with what the clothing worn by the villagers during that period. There will be horse drawn history tours, craft demonstrations, artisans, children's games and historical displays. A BBQ pulled pork dinner is planned for 5:30 p.m. followed by readings from various authors who have lived and written about the village and surrounding areas. Volunteers are needed to help, both the day of and leading up to this event. Anyone wishing to be a part of the celebration is asked to call Lynne Hutchinson at 613-374-1470.
